Emails stop working when launching a new website

The most common thing that happens, (especially when both the client the person working on the site don’t have the experience) are emails stop working.

Why does this happen?

Here are 3 of the most common reasons:

  1. DNS and MX Record Issues
    • When switching to a new server, DNS settings might have changed.
    • Check your MX (Mail Exchange) records to ensure they still point to the correct mail server (e.g., Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, or your own mail server).
    • Use MXToolbox to verify your MX records.
  2. Email Server Not Configured on the New Server
    • If you were using the same server for email and website hosting, the new server might not have a mail server set up.
    • Verify if Postfix, Exim, or another mail service is running on the new server.
  3. Wrong Email Client Settings
    • If you were using a third-party email service (like Gmail, Outlook, etc.), your incoming (IMAP/POP) and outgoing (SMTP) settings might need updating.
    • Ensure you’re using the right mail server and authentication details.
